Lobelia rogersii (McVaugh’s Lobelia)

$12.00

Sharing is caring!

Native Lobelia blooms or months on end.  It was covered with flowers until the snow came in January. They foliage stayed green all winter.  Butterflies and hummingbirds love it. It adapts to wide range of soil moisture. I had been calling it Downy Lobelia (Lobelia puberula) but I think this was a mistake. The undersides of the leaves are white. It is definitely not Lobelia siphilitica which some “play native nurseries” are selling as that is not native on the coast.  I wish I had better pictures.

Check back later in Spring or Summer to order this species! Right now, we are rebuilding our stock.

Description

2′-3′ tall native perennial blooms summer-fall (through winter and into spring during warm seasons on the coast. The basal leaves are evergreen.  Lobelia flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, native bees, and beneficial insects. Lobelia sps are one of the larval hosts of the Pink-washed Looper Moth. Birds feed on the caterpillars.  Plant in full sun to part shade in average to wet soil. Lobelia are almost always deer-resistant. The plants we offer were derived from a native population in Tattnall Co., GA.  https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Enigmogramma-basigera
