Description
This 3′-4′ tall native bunchgrass is larval host to four butterflies: The Dusted Skipper (above), Indian Skipper, Crossline Skipper and Ottoe Skipper. Birds and small mammals use it for food, sheltern and nesting material. It is one of the grasses that was cut to make brooms. Plant in sun or part-shade in average to dry soil. It is deer-resistant. It is highly deer-resistan. Plant it around plants that they eat and its wispy stems will block the deer’s access. It is strong enough to support many perennials but wispy enough to not block your view. Many native grasses will decline rapidly without fire. Fire benefits Creeping Little Bluestem, but it can survive for decades without burning.
