Description
2′-4” tall native evergreen shrub. Produces 4 petalled yellow flowers from June-October attracting Native Bees and Syrphid Flies. Foliage smells like citrus. Medicinal: contains anti-depressant chemicals. Sun or shade, wet or dry. Flowers are pollinated by Native Bees, and Syrphid Flies. Larval host of Gray Hairstreak Butterfly and Numerous moths including the Treble Bar, Gray Pug, Common Emerald, and Gray Half-spot. Several other insects depend on Hypericum including the Hypericum Spittlebug, Hypericum Aphid. Leafhoppers, Leaf Beetles. The abundance of insects make Hypericum good hunting grounds for Mother Birds. Birds also eat the seeds. Two ant species Formica montana and F. subsericea decorate their nests with its bright yellow petals.[1
