Description

This resilient 1′-2′ tall native fern spreads by rhizomes to form tight colonies. It is the only larval host for Fagitana littera (Marsh Fern Moth).https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Fagitana-littera Marsh Ferns provide shelter for ground-feeding birds and small mammals. Plant in average to wet (even flooded soil) in sun or shade. (YES IT CAN GROW IN FULL SUN IF THE SOIL ISN’T TOO DRY. IT IS THRIVING IN MY SUNNY RAIN GARDEN W/O ANY IRRIGATION). We have been growing Marsh Ferns since 1992, when I rescued a native population from highway construction in Beaufort Co,SC. Back then I misidentified them as Lady Ferns. Dr. Larry Mellichamp corrected my error. Since then, we have blended another native population into our Marsh Ferns. Deer resistant in most gardens. If you have a severe deer problem interplant them with one of our “Deer Baffles”.
