Phlox carolina (Carolina Phlox)

Description

This 1′-2′ tall native perennial  is evergreen and  blooms year-round where winters are mild.Butterflies love the nectar. It thrives in average to wet soil in sun or part shade.  It is a good choice for the heavy clay soils of many new subdivisions. Cut stems back to the crown after blooming to promote heavier blooming.  If deer are a problem interplant with Arundinaria tecta, Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Chasmanthium laxum or Salvia coccinea. Unlike many horticultural cultivars of  Phlox, this native species has never given me a fungus problem with me, even with overhead irrigation.  Though it will sometimes spread by seed, is never aggressive in the garden. We propagate our plants from native populations in Beaufort, Hampton, Jasper and Colleton Counties, SC. It was made for the heat and the humidity!
