Description

1′-2′ tall Rare Native Evergreen Shrub. Numerous yellow flowers attract Bumble Bees, Halictid Bees and Flower Flies. Larval host of Gray Hairstreak and 13 different Moths. The abundance of caterpillars makes them good hunting areas for mother birds. St. Joh’s Wort’s have been used medicinally.

I asked Dr. Alan Weakley to ID this plant for me. He told me that they are working on describing it as a new species. It was known only from NC. I asked him what I shall call it in the catalog. He suggested Mystery St. John’s Wort. We propagated ours from a native population in a roadside bog in Horry Co., SC.  I added a little peat to their soil mix. They have thrived with normal watering. Plant in sun or light shade.
