Description
Native Evergreen Perennial with intricate leaves and abundant spring flowers. Larval Host of Several Fritillary Butterflis. The most widespread of these is the Variegated Fritillary. Flowers Attract Native Bees, Butterflies, Skippers and Beneficial Insects. Seeds eaten by birds. Prefers Average to Moist Soil in Sun to Part Shade. This species is often confused with Viola palmata, and Viola esculenta. Native NC, TN, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX. I suspect it may also be native in Mexico. We propagated the plants in our nursery from native populations in Beaufort and Colleton Counties, SC. Steve Danko donated some of the original stock to the nursery.
